The Saudi-backed Masam Project for Landmine Clearance in Yemen has safely destroyed 5,926 landmines, unexploded ordnance and other war remnants collected from Yemen's western coast, as part of ongoing efforts to protect civilians and reduce the threat posed by explosive hazards.
The disposal operation was carried out in the Bab al-Mandab area of Taiz Governorate by Masam's Special Tasks Team Two, led by engineer Adeeb Rajab, following the completion of transportation, preparation and safety procedures in accordance with approved explosive ordnance disposal standards.
According to the project, the destroyed items included 42 anti-personnel mines, 56 anti-tank mines, eight improvised explosive devices, four rockets, two hand grenades, 116 artillery shells, 2,722 fuzes and 2,971 rounds of various ammunition, bringing the total number of items disposed of to 5,926.
Adeeb Rajab said the explosives had been collected over the past two months by Masam clearance teams operating in contaminated areas along Yemen's western coast as part of ongoing survey and demining operations.
