Parliament Speaker continues participation in 149th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union
[16/10/2024 07:15]

GENEVA - SABA
The Speaker of the Parliament Sheikh Sultan al-Barakani, along with his accompanying parliamentary delegation, continued their participation on Wednesday in the 149th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, held in the Swiss city of Geneva from October 13 to 17.

During the session, discussions took place regarding the urgent agenda item adopted in the 149th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, which included several points.

The most significant of these was a call for the international community, including members of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, to unite efforts to achieve an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the Republic of Lebanon, provide substantial and unhindered humanitarian assistance to Gaza, and offer full support for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in the Middle East through the implementation of a two-state solution, including recognition of the Palestinian state.

It also emphasized effective measures to curb the spread of violent conflicts affecting populations and civilians in several conflict areas, including Yemen, Sudan, and other affected regions worldwide, where violence and humanitarian suffering persist due to the absence of effective solutions, political will, and reliable mechanisms to support peace efforts.

The urgent agenda item also highlighted the serious challenges facing the international community, from the increasing number of international conflicts to the consequences of climate change, the threat of pandemics, and other global threats such as famine and food insecurity, which lead to a doubling of humanitarian crises.

There is an urgent need for a collective response based on renewed political will to foster international cooperation and share responsibilities across geopolitical divides to build a more peaceful world and create a better future for current and future generations.

During the participation in the General Assembly session, the Cramer-Passy Prize was celebrated, and discussions continued regarding accountability for the implementation of the resolutions of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and its other decisions.
The session discussed also the completion of meetings of the permanent committees of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the election of their executive offices.
