UN Deputy Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Ramiz Alakbarov warned Wednesday of the consequences of escalating violence and settlement activity in the occupied West Bank.

Addressing a UN Security Council session requested by the five European members of the Council, Alakbarov said the continued violence and settlement expansion are deepening Palestinian suffering and undermining prospects for an independent Palestinian state.

He said the current deterioration is rooted in decades of unresolved conflict, which has strengthened Israel’s occupation and pushed the Palestinian Authority to the brink of collapse.

The Council session focused on the escalating violence in the occupied West Bank.
