ADEN - SABA
Minister of Communications and Information Technology Dr. Shadi Basurra discussed Monday with a World Bank delegation, which included Digital Specialist Issam Khayyat and Senior Digital Specialist George Frederick, aspects of technical and digital support for Yemen’s telecommunications sector.
Next steps for implementing the priorities of the digital transformation agenda to enhance the sector’s role in supporting development was also discussed.
Dr. Basurra reviewed the efforts being made by the ministry to enhance the institutional, technical, regulatory, and supervisory capacities of the telecommunications and information technology sector, as well as the achievements made in improving institutional performance and strengthening the sector’s readiness to keep pace with digital transformation.
He stressed that building modern and strong telecommunications infrastructure represents a fundamental pillar for attracting investments, stimulating economic growth, and supporting sustainable development paths in the country.
The Minister of Communications and Information Technology pointed to the ministry’s needs for technical support in preparing the organizational structure, building capacities, and developing policies and legislation governing the sector.
He also reviewed the ministry’s plans to modernize regulations and systems in line with technological developments, particularly regarding the regulation of establishing submarine gateways, submarine cables, and fiber-optic networks, in a way that enhances the investment environment and provides broader opportunities for private sector participation.
Minister Basra explained that Yemen’s strategic location, as one of the world’s most important maritime corridors, qualifies it to become a regional hub connecting telecommunications traffic between East and West.
He praised the support provided by the World Bank to Yemen over the past years, emphasizing that advancing the telecommunications and information technology sector will positively impact various vital and service sectors, contribute to improving services provided to citizens, and strengthen development and recovery efforts.
For their part, the World Bank’s digital specialists affirmed the Bank’s commitment to continuing its support for Yemen, especially under the current circumstances.
They noted that digital transformation and artificial intelligence are no longer optional but have become essential requirements for enhancing the efficiency of vital and service sectors, particularly the telecommunications and information technology sector.
They also explained that the World Bank places importance on supporting digital solutions that are suitable for Yemen’s circumstances and needs, and on contributing to the rehabilitation and development of telecommunications infrastructure in a way that enhances economic recovery opportunities and supports sustainable development efforts.
