Speakers of the Yemeni Parliament and Shura Council Participate in Conference of Arab Parliament in Cairo
[27/06/2026 05:58]

CAIRO – SABA
The Speaker of the Parliament Sheikh Sultan al-Barakani and the Speaker of the Shura Council Dr. Ahmed Obaid bin Daghr participated Saturday in the proceedings of the 8th Conference of the Arab Parliament and Speakers of Arab Councils and Parliaments, held at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States in Cairo, Egypt.

The conference, attended by speakers of Arab parliaments and legislative councils as well as heads of parliamentary delegations, discussed three main strategic issues.

These included developments concerning the Palestinian cause, what was described as repeated Iranian attacks against Gulf countries and several Arab states, the region’s ongoing transformations and escalating security challenges, in addition to strengthening Arab digital sovereignty amid rapid global changes.

During the conference al-Barakani delivered a speech in which he said that the Arab nation is going through an extremely critical phase that requires unifying positions and advancing joint Arab action to confront challenges threatening its security, stability, and sovereignty.

He stressed that the region is witnessing an unprecedented escalation in conflicts, wars, and projects of domination and expansion.

He noted that he had previously warned, in his speech before the same conference in 2019, about the dangers of what he called the Iranian project and the consequences of foreign interference in the region.

He added that what the Arab arena is witnessing today of what he described as “blatant Iranian terrorist attacks” against Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, the UAE, Jordan, and other Arab countries confirms the validity of those warnings.

He called for the establishment of a joint Arab defense and deterrence system, as well as a rapid intervention force to protect Arab states’ sovereignty and national security.

He said: “The winds of betrayal came fiercely storming from there, from the eastern corner of the great Arab homeland, carrying a Persian scent burdened with the deep grudges of the past, since the Arabs moved them from fire worship to the vastness of Islam.”

Al cause will remain the core issue of the conflict in the region until the Palestinian people obtain their legitimate rights, foremost among them the establishment of an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.

For his part, Shura Council Speaker Dr. Ahmed Obaid bin Daghr stated that the Arab nation faces growing existential challenges requiring the strengthening of Arab solidarity and the development of joint mechanisms to confront threats to Arab national security.

He pointed out that Iranian interventions and what he described as an expansionist project in the region, alongside the Israeli occupation, represent two major challenges targeting the security and stability of Arab states.

He emphasized that the Palestinian cause remains the central issue for the Arab nation and that peace begins with ending the occupation and establishing an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Bin Daghr explained that Yemen has been and continues to be one of the countries most impacted by Iranian interference through support for the Houthi militias. He affirmed that the support of the Arab coalition led by Saudi Arabia, along with assistance from brotherly Arab countries, contributed to protecting Yemen and preventing the collapse of the state. He expressed appreciation to Arab countries that supported Yemen and hosted Yemenis under various circumstances.

Speeches were also delivered by the Speaker of the Arab Parliament, Mohammed Ahmed al-Yamahi and the President of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union and Speaker of the Shura Council of Saudi Arabia Sheikh Dr. Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Ibrahim Al Al-Sheikh, along with several Arab parliamentary speakers and delegation heads.

Their remarks emphasized the importance of holding the conference amid the exceptional circumstances facing the region and the need to strengthen Arab solidarity, unify positions on shared issues and challenges, particularly the Palestinian cause, Arab national security, digital transformation, and digital sovereignty.
