YEREVAN – SABA
Yemen has called for prioritizing least developed and conflict-affected countries in biodiversity financing, ensuring access to adequate funding, technology transfer and capacity-building support.
Speaking at the high-level segment of the 17th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17) in Yerevan, Armenia, Chairman of Environment Protection Authority Fahmi Abdulhadi bin Shubraq stressed that the main challenge is turning international commitments into practical action backed by sufficient resources.
He highlighted Yemen’s unique biodiversity, particularly the Socotra Archipelago, which faces growing threats from climate change, ecosystem degradation, unsustainable resource use, and the consequences of the ongoing conflict.
Yemen has completed its Third National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan for 2025–2030, aligned with the Global Biodiversity Framework.
The country also called for easier access to international funding, stronger protection of terrestrial and marine ecosystems, and fair sharing of benefits from genetic resources and digital sequence information.
Yemen reaffirmed its commitment to cooperation with international organizations and partners to translate national priorities into practical conservation programs.
