ADEN - SABA
The Green Climate Fund, during its 46th Board meeting (B.46) held in the Republic of Korea, approved the project 'Climate and Water Information Management and Early Warning Systems in Yemen' (CWIMEWS) with a total budget of $28 million.
The project aims to improve Yemen’s ability to deal with climate risks, improve water resource management and protect the communities most vulnerable to these impacts.
Minister of Water and Environment Eng. Tawfiq al-Sharjabi stated that the project is funded by a grant of $24.73 million from the Green Climate Fund, along with joint funding of $3.647 million from the Trust Fund for Resilience, Recovery, and Reconstruction in Yemen, which is managed by the World Bank.
He underscored the importance of the project in strengthening national capacities to monitor and predict climate risks, and to provide the necessary information to support decision-making in the water and agriculture sectors.
The project aims to develop a comprehensive national system for climate, water and early warning information, helping to protect lives and property, support farmers in dealing with drought and flood risks, enhance water and food security, and reduce the impacts of extreme weather events.
The project includes upgrading and expanding climate and water monitoring networks, creating an integrated national information platform, and developing forecasting and early warning services to support irrigation planning, agricultural activities, protecting water sources, and improving preparedness for climate disasters.
As many as 9.2 million people are expected to benefit from the project by improving access to information and early warnings for local authorities and the most vulnerable groups, including farmers, displaced people, people with disabilities, and residents of rural and remote areas, which helps boost disaster readiness and strengthens resilience against climate change.
