Yemen: Houthi Attacks in Bab al-Mandab Part of Iran’s Maritime Strategy

The Yemeni government said that Houthi attacks and acts of piracy in international shipping lanes, particularly in the Bab al-Mandab Strait, are part of Iran’s strategy aimed at militarizing maritime routes and using them as leverage over global energy and trade flows.

This came in Yemen’s statement before the UN Security Council during an open high-level debate on “Safety and Protection of Maritime Routes,” under the agenda item “Maintenance of International Peace and Security.” The statement was delivered by Yemen’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Abdullah al-Saadi.

Al-Saadi said recent developments in strategic waterways highlight the need for enhanced international coordination to address maritime security threats and ensure the protection of freedom of navigation.
