WASHINGTON – SABA
The U.S. administration has extended work permits for hundreds of thousands of migrants from Haiti and six other countries who are protected under the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program, just hours before the permits were due to expire.
The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), an agency of the Department of Homeland Security, said in a statement that work permits for Haitian TPS beneficiaries were set to expire on July 24, while permits for TPS holders from Ethiopia, Syria, Somalia, Yemen, South Sudan, and Myanmar were due to expire within a week.
The extension, approved by the administration of President Donald Trump, comes amid calls from labor unions to renew the permits, warning that ending the program would create workplace disruption and affect key sectors of the U.S. economy.
