MARIB - SABA
Deputy Governor of Marib Abd-Rabu Miftah met Sunday with a delegation from the Turkish associations “Deniz Feneri” and “Al-Khair,” headed by Ufuk Khan Diyar.
He discussed with them humanitarian interventions of the associations in the governorate and the possibility of expanding them, as well as strengthening humanitarian partnership between the local authority and the two organizations.
During the meeting, which was attended by Saqr Al-Jaadi, Deputy Head of Tawasol Foundation—the national implementing partner for the Turkish associations’ projects—the participants reviewed the humanitarian situation in the governorate and the heavy burdens borne by the local authority in addressing growing needs due to the massive influx of displaced people to Marib.
The governorate hosts more than 62 percent of the total internally displaced persons in the Republic of Yemen.
Dr. Miftah pointed to the negative impact of declining humanitarian funding for Yemen and the withdrawal of UN and international organizations from financing many programs that previously supported emergency interventions to meet significant basic needs—needs that exceed the local authority’s capacity in the sectors of food, shelter, housing, health, education, water, and protection. He also highlighted the effects of the economic crisis, climate change, and the ongoing conflict on the humanitarian situation of both the displaced population and the host community, stressing the need to expand partnerships with organizations that have independent funding sources.
The Deputy Governor affirmed that the local authority will continue to provide all necessary facilitation to humanitarian partners and Turkish associations to ease the implementation of both emergency and sustainable development interventions, aiming to alleviate the suffering of displaced persons and the host community.
For his part, Diyar explained that the delegation’s first visit to the governorate reflects their commitment to strengthening partnership with the local authority and exploring possible humanitarian interventions in line with priority needs.
The visit also included the launch of several ongoing humanitarian projects to ease the hardship of displaced families, including the distribution of 1,500 food baskets, 1,500 ready-to-eat iftar meals, 50 wheelchairs for people with disabilities, and 700 copies of the Holy Qur’an.
