Head of the Yemeni Women’s Empowerment Foundation Zaafaran Zaid said the September 26 Revolution transformed the status of Yemeni women, expanding their rights to education, work, political participation and public life.

In remarks to Saba marking the revolution’s 64th anniversary, Zaid said women went on to serve as lawmakers, judges, lawyers, journalists, engineers, ministers and military and security personnel, while also taking leading roles in business and development.

She said, however, that years of war and Houthi militia practices had severely undermined these gains, exposing women to poverty, displacement, detention, restrictions on movement, work and education, and violence. Women and girls have also faced risks from landmines and other conflict-related dangers.

Zaid stressed that Yemeni women deserve to regain their full rights and freedoms and remain active partners in building the state and society free from discrimination, exclusion, violence and guardianship.
