Korea's Travel Account Posts Surplus for 3rd Month in Row

South Korea reported a surplus in its tourism account for the third month in a row in May, driven by a rise in the number of foreign tourists, reaching $220.5 million in May compared to a deficit of $820.2 million in the same month last year.
The Korea Tourism Organization stated in a press release that Korea has recorded a surplus for three consecutive months since last March when the account had a surplus of $263.8 million, ending a 72-month deficit streak since March 2020.
Total tourism income made $2.58 billion in May, surpassing tourism spending of $2.36 billion.
The average spending per foreign tourist in South Korea was $1,324, while the average spending per Korean traveler abroad was $1,007.
