Yemen underlines the importance of security and safety of international navigation routes for nations prosperity
[13/08/2025 01:44]
NEW YORK-SABA
The Republic of Yemen affirmed that one of the pillars of achieving security, stability and prosperity of nations depends on the safety and security of international maritime routes, underlining the importance of joint cooperation and coordination to face emerging challenges.

This is came in the Republic of Yemen's statement before the Security Council during the open discussion session on 'Maritime Security: Prevention, Innovation and International Cooperation to Address Emerging Challenges', delivered by Yemen's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Abdullah al-Saadi.

The statement reads "Recently, the terrorist attacks by the Houthi militias in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait have demonstrated the importance of this waterway to the global economy and the impact of disruptions on international trade, global economic stability and the marine environment."

The statement added" The recent years have witnessed a noticeable increase in the targeting of Houthi militias with ballistic missiles, drones and fast explosive boats, aimed at cargo ships and international shipping lanes, endangering maritime security".

"An example of this is the attack on the tanker "RUBYMAR" at the beginning of last year, which caused it to sink 15 miles from the port of Mokha, carrying 22,000 tons of ammonia phosphate and about 180 tons of ship fuel and oils that would inevitably leak into the marine environment", al-Saadi cited, adding: There was also the awful attack by Houthi militias last month on the tankers "MAGIC SEAS" and "ETERNITY C", which led to their sinking and the death and disappearance of several crew members, while others were taken hostage.

Al-Saadi affirmed that the threats posed by the Houthi militias to shipping lines in the Red Sea, Bab el-Mandeb, and the Gulf of Aden are not just a temporary and fleeting danger, nor they began in 2023.

" They, rather, have been a recurring Houthi approach for years and represent a constant threat to regional and international peace and security, as well as a structural danger to Yemen, the region and maritime navigation routes", he stressed.
