Members of the UN Security Council stressed the need for full implementation of Resolution 2216 (2015) and subsequent resolutions on Yemen, reaffirming their support for the Yemeni government and commitment to Yemen’s unity, sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.
In a statement issued Friday, they strongly condemned continued Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, including attacks affecting civilians and energy infrastructure, as well as missile attacks, attacks on commercial vessels and threats to international shipping in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab Strait.
The Council members called on the Houthis to immediately halt their military escalation and attacks affecting civilians and civilian objects, stressing respect for international law and maritime navigation rights.
They expressed concern over civilian casualties and the displacement of at least 125,000 people across Yemen since the beginning of September, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, and called for full and unhindered humanitarian access.
They also demanded the immediate and unconditional release of detainees, including 73 UN personnel and employees of humanitarian, civil society and diplomatic organizations.
The Council members reaffirmed their support for UN Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg and his efforts to achieve an inclusive, negotiated political settlement led and owned by Yemenis, based on agreed terms of reference and relevant Security Council resolutions.
