WASHINGTON-SABA
Powerful Typhoon Bavi battered the U.S. Pacific island of Rota on Monday, marking the second major typhoon to hit the region since April.
The U.S. National Weather Service said Typhoon Bavi, equivalent in strength to a Category 5 hurricane, was moving directly over Rota, an island of about 2,000 residents in the Northern Mariana Islands.
The storm was packing maximum sustained winds exceeding 180 mph.
The typhoon follows Typhoon Sinlaku, which struck the region earlier this year, dumping more than 20 inches of rain across parts of the Northern Mariana Islands.
The storm triggered widespread flooding, prolonged power outages, and extensive damage to homes and infrastructure on the islands of Saipan and Tinian.
