ADEN-SABA
Presidential Leadership Council member Lt. Gen. Mahmoud al-Subaihi received on Monday at Maashiq Palace in Aden a United Nations delegation headed by Principal Military Adviser to the United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen, Antony Hayward.
During the meeting, al-Subaihi reaffirmed the commitment of the Presidential Leadership Council and the government to continued coordination and cooperation with the United Nations in support of efforts aimed at advancing peace and reinforcing security and stability in Yemen and the broader region.
He stressed that the council remains committed to achieving a just, secure, and sustainable peace that guarantees the restoration of state institutions and brings an end to the suffering of the Yemeni people.
Al-Subaihi said Yemen’s security remains a cornerstone of regional security, noting that any instability in the country has direct repercussions for regional and international peace, particularly amid the rapid political and security developments currently unfolding across the region.
He pointed out that ongoing regional tensions, particularly the confrontation and rising strain between the United States and Iran, and the resulting political, military, and security consequences, have affected the wider region and contributed to growing instability, while threatening international maritime navigation and strategic sea lanes.
Al-Subaihi said the international community must assume its responsibilities and pressure Iran to refrain from fueling wars and crises in the region, move toward peace, and respect the sovereignty of states without interference in their internal affairs. He added that Tehran’s continued support for armed militias deepens instability and undermines opportunities for lasting peace.
He said the Houthi militias, backed by Iran, do not genuinely support peace and are not seeking a real settlement to the Yemeni crisis.
Rather, he said, they aim to impose their project by force and control strategic waterways, particularly the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, given its strategic significance for global trade, while also serving Iran’s broader efforts to expand influence over the Strait of Hormuz.
He warned that these threats pose a direct danger to regional and international peace and security, calling for a unified international response and stronger support for Yemen’s legitimate government and state institutions to preserve regional stability.
Al-Subaihi underscored the importance of strengthening Yemen’s state institutions and enhancing their military and security capacities to confront current challenges, combat terrorism, and secure international shipping lanes in a manner that serves regional and global peace.
He reiterated the political leadership’s adherence to the three core references for peace: the Gulf Initiative and its executive mechanism, the outcomes of the National Dialogue Conference, and relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions, foremost among them Resolution 2216, as the main foundations for achieving a comprehensive and just peace.
