Expert: 133 died, 20,000 suspected infected by cholera in Taiz
[02/07/2017 10:07]

TAIZ-SABA
As many as 133 persons have died of cholera and 20,000 others are suspected to have been infected in Taiz, the chairwoman of Choler Surveillance Unit Dr. Elan Abdul-Haq told Saba.

"Blood culture tests showed 302 positive cases and a remarkable decline in cholera-related mortalities in the areas where the epidemic's outbreak had raged, mainly Sharaab Arrownah countryside," she said.

"That (decline) comes by the virtue of water chlorination, a mass practice promoted by the international organizations involved in raising health awareness."

The chairwoman, however, noted that infections and mortalities are on remarkable rise in downtown Taiz and Maqbanah district. "Because of the lack of awareness-raising campaigns on chlorination and preventive hygiene in these areas."

The highly populated city of Taiz has been under nearly to three year-long siege by the Saleh Houthi militia. The militias bar food, medical and other relief aid from entry into the city.
