RIYADH-SABA
The West Asia Journalists Union has strongly condemned the killing of Yemeni journalist Mohammed Aidha, the Mukalla-based correspondent for Al Arabiya and Al Hadath television channels, who was killed when an explosive device planted in his vehicle detonated in the eastern city of Mukalla.
In a statement received by Saba, the union described the attack as a shocking crime and a direct assault on press freedom and the fundamental right to freedom of expression and access to information.
The union said the killing reflected a broader and deeply troubling pattern of violence targeting journalists and media professionals, warning that the attack highlighted the growing dangers facing reporters and opinion-makers across the region.
It noted that the incident raises serious concerns about the safety of journalists in Yemen and underscores the urgent need for stronger measures to protect media workers carrying out their professional duties.
The union called on security and judicial authorities in Hadramout to launch an immediate and transparent investigation into the bombing, identify those responsible, including any planners or instigators, and bring them to justice.
It also pointed to reports from security sources indicating that Aidha had received threats in the weeks preceding the attack.
The statement further urged the international community, United Nations agencies, human rights organizations, and the International Federation of Journalists to take a firm stance in support of journalist safety and to press for greater protections for media professionals working in high-risk environments.
