Yemen, France Discuss Fisheries Monitoring and Sustainable Fishing Cooperation
[23/06/2026 04:48]

ADEN - SABA
Agriculture, Irrigation and Fisheries Minister Maj. Gen. Salem Al-Soqatri and French Ambassador to Yemen Catherine Corm-Kammoun discussed ways to strengthen cooperation on fisheries management during a virtual meeting on Tuesday, with particular focus on combating illegal fishing and improving oversight of Yemen's vast marine resources.

The talks centered on plans to enhance monitoring of fishing activities through a satellite-based Vessel Monitoring System (VMS), a project the ministry says will help track fishing vessels, strengthen maritime safety and improve enforcement against illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.

The two sides also reviewed ongoing efforts to regulate fishing operations in accordance with international standards and conservation measures aimed at protecting fish stocks while ensuring the long-term sustainability of the sector.
Al-Soqatri said the fisheries industry remains one of Yemen's most important economic sectors and stressed the need for stronger international partnerships to support government efforts to modernize fisheries management and safeguard marine resources.

He noted that artisanal fishermen account for most of Yemen's fishing activity, operating an estimated 25,000 boats along the country's coastline. Yemen produces roughly 360,000 tons of fish and other marine products annually, with exports reaching more than 50 countries and generating over $370 million in revenue each year.

The minister said the planned monitoring system would provide authorities with better tools to oversee fishing operations, improve compliance with regulations and support more effective management of marine resources.

Corm-Kammoun reaffirmed France's support for Yemen's efforts to develop the fisheries sector and strengthen sustainable resource management.
