BERLIN-SABA
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has called on Europeans to strive for greater autonomy, emphasizing the need for Europe to defend itself using its own capabilities, given the shift in transatlantic relations.
Speaking at the New Year's reception of the Deutsche Börse in Eschborn, near Frankfurt, Merz said: "We are currently experiencing what is likely the greatest period of political uncertainties and unpredictability, certainly a profound turning point. It is a break with the past."
Merz urged Europe to become more self-reliant, strengthen its defense capabilities, and improve economic competitiveness.
He expressed belief that if Europeans act in a "united and determined manner," they can navigate this transformation successfully.
