Japanese authorities announced today that the country's forest fires are the most severe and extensive since the 1992 fires.
The Fire and Disaster Management Agency in Japan stated that the fires have covered an area of 1,200 hectares in the Ofunato Forest in the Iwate region in northern Japan since they erupted last Wednesday.
The agency's spokesperson said in a press statement, "We are still examining the area affected by the fires, but it is the largest since the forest fires in 1992, which consumed 1,030 hectares at that time."
