BAKU - SABA
Minister of Water and Environment Engineer Tawfiq al-Sharjabi participated Friday in a high-level session focused on building networks to enhance peace and resilience in climate-impacted environments.
This session took place on the sidelines of the International Climate Summit (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, organized by the Audi Global Foundation.
The Minister affirmed that the Republic of Yemen is determined to continue its efforts alongside countries worldwide to address the impacts of climate change.
He emphasized the importance of finding comprehensive solutions to the climate crisis that include everyone, considering just transition as part of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement.
Al-Sharjabi noted that Yemen has experienced six cyclones in six years, and that floods and heavy rains have impacted 30% of the agricultural land within a single year in a country that heavily relies on agriculture, making it one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change.
He stressed the necessity of facilitating access to climate financing for adaptation purposes in the most impacted countries, which now face existential threats due to the worsening impacts of climate change that exacerbate conflicts and undermine global stability.
Minister al-Sharjabi called on governments and international organizations to act to bridge the financing gap by increasing funding dedicated to climate adaptation, simplifying bureaucratic procedures and building capacities in developing countries.
He also called for supporting national plans for developing and least developed countries to help them adapt and transfer towards renewable energy and a green economy.
