ADEN-SABA
Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism Muammar al-Eryani issued an urgent appeal to the Director-General of UNESCO Audrey Azoulay and the Director of the UNESCO Regional Office for the Gulf States and Yemen Salah Khalid to immediately intervene to preserve and protect the archaeological areas that have been badly affected by the rains and floods that swept a number of historic cities located in the Houthi militia- controlled areas.
He said "The field reports confirm that a number of historical Yemeni cities have been destroyed by heavy and devastating torrential rains due to the atmosphere depression that Yemen has been subjected to over the past days, the most important of which are the old cities of Sana'a and Zabid, both are listed on the World Heritage List."
Al-Eryani added "The floods caused the collapse of the upper part of the northern façade of the historic Zabid Castle and many
historical houses in the old city of Sana'a were seriously affected by the floods, have become prone to fall and collapse.
Moreover, one of the historical palaces of the old city of Sana'a has already fallen down and the historical Castel of Rada'a, in al-Baidha governorate, has suffered serious damages, large parts of its walls have already collapsed.
