ADEN-SABA
Minister of Water and Environment Engineer Tawfiq al-Sharjabi discussed with the First Secretary and Head of the Water and Water Security Department at the Dutch Embassy in Yemen Jan Peter on Monday the feasibility of building a seawater desalination plant in the city of Aden.
The meeting discussed a range of topics related to the available methods and approaches to develop a roadmap for adopting the direction towards seawater desalination in the city of Aden as a first stage, as well as the possibility of expanding the experience to other coastal areas.
The Minister of Water and Environment pointed out that the ministry intends to direct the projects provided by organizations and donor agencies to implement seawater desalination projects to solve the problem of water needs, improve water supply services, and address the severe shortage in the temporary capital of Aden by providing it with the necessary drinking water to meet the increasing demand due to the population density of the city of Aden, and to benefit from it in generalizing the experience to coastal cities.
For his part, the First Secretary and Head of the Water and Water Security Department at the Dutch Embassy presented an invitation from the Dutch government to the Yemeni government to conduct a training program in this context to build capacities and knowledge in various desalination techniques.
The two parties agreed on joint preparation of a memorandum of understanding to define the outlines of the program and the next steps to mobilize funding for the seawater desalination project in the city of Aden.
Utilizing existing programs currently underway to prepare studies and select suitable sites for the plants within a decentralized program for water production was highlighted in the agreement.
