NEW YORK - SABA
Yemen's representative to the United Nations Ambassador Abdullah Al-Saadi has confirmed that providing support to the Yemeni government to restore state institutions and protect its territorial waters is the solution to confront escalation by the terrorist Houthi militia in the Red Sea.
In a meeting with the UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo, he pointed out that supporting the government and enabling it to exercise its control over the entire Yemeni territory, including the ports of Hodeidah, is sufficient to stop the threat to international navigation in the Red Sea, and contributes to imposing regional and international security and stability.
He stressed the commitment of the Presidential Leadership Council and the Yemeni government to the peace option and welcomed regional and international initiatives aimed at ending the conflict, resuming the political process, and achieving comprehensive and sustainable peace based on the terms of reference for the agreed upon political solution, including the relevant Security Council resolutions, including Resolution 2216.
The meeting discussed developments in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait, the attacks of the terrorist Houthi militia against international shipping lanes, their effects on the humanitarian and economic situation, the exacerbation of the humanitarian crisis, all as Houthi maneuvers to escape from overdue the political process, and to undermine efforts aimed at ending this conflict.
He added that the Houthi terrorist attacks in the Red Sea are a systematic Houthi policy that had begun years before the start of the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip, warning that the continued flow of Iranian weapons to the Houthi militia constitutes a serious threat to regional and international peace and security and prolongs the war.
The Permanent Representative also stressed in the meeting the importance of disbursing funds from international organizations for humanitarian aid, including United Nations agencies, to the Central Bank in Aden, with the aim of improving economic conditions and helping to stabilize the national currency. For her part, the Under-Secretary-General expressed her support for peaceful efforts to resolve the crisis in Yemen, alleviate the humanitarian suffering of the Yemenis, and support the efforts of the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations.
