ADEN – SABA
Rasd Organization for Rights and Freedoms stated that the city of Taiz is on the brink of an impending catastrophe following the prevention of essential supplies from entering the city, the closure of roads and access routes and the continued imposition of a tight siege by the Iran-backed Houthi terrorist militia.
In a statement issued on the occasion of World Food Day, observed on October 16, the organization said that Yemen has reached Phase 4 of the severe humanitarian situation, while the city of Taiz is currently suffering from a suffocating siege imposed by the Houthi terrorist militia on more than 2.5 million residents, including 140,000 internally displaced people. The organization called for pressure to be exerted on the militia to reopen roads and allow essential supplies, medical aid, and water to reach the city.
The organization noted that Taiz Governorate has entered Phase 5, the final phase classified as a catastrophe, following a call by the local authorities for the provision of essential food supplies to residents.
It warned of an impending disaster if the situation continues without intervention from relevant United Nations and international organizations to protect civilians and ensure the delivery of humanitarian assistance.
It stressed the urgent need for intervention to save the people of Taiz from an imminent catastrophe, amid the lack of the most basic necessities of life, the interruption of fuel and water supplies, and continued indiscriminate shelling of civilians in the city.
The shelling has intensified in recent days, resulting in dozens of casualties, including women and children.
The organization explained that Yemen has been facing a worsening food security crisis since 2014, driven by the ongoing conflict, economic deterioration, displacement, declining sources of income, rising food prices, damage to agricultural production, and reduced humanitarian funding.
The organization called on the international community, donors, and humanitarian organizations to increase humanitarian funding, strengthen food security and nutrition programs, support livelihoods, and address the economic and humanitarian root causes of the conflict, thereby ensuring Yemenis’ right to adequate and safe food.
Rasd Organization also issued a humanitarian appeal to the United Nations and its agencies, urging them to fulfill their moral and legal responsibilities to protect civilians and ensure the delivery of essential necessities, including food and medicine, amid the recent escalation by the Houthi militia.
