NEW YORK - SABA
Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council Dr. Rashad al-Alimi, along with Council members Major General Aidaroos al-Zubaidi and Dr. Abdullah al-Alimi, met Tuesday with President Edgar Rinkevich, President of the Republic of Latvia, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meetings.
The meeting discussed bilateral relations between the two friendly countries, and prospects for strengthening them in various fields.
President al-Alimi stressed the importance of the role that the friendly Republic of Latvia can play in enhancing the chances of peace in Yemen and the region through its membership in the Security Council and the Sanctions Committee established pursuant to Security Council Resolution 2140, preserving the unity of the international community regarding the Yemeni file and increasing collective pressure on the terrorist Houthi militias supported by the Iranian regime.
He briefed the President of the Republic of Latvia on the latest developments in the local situation, the repercussions of the devastating war sparked by the terrorist Houthi militias, their serious attacks on shipping lines and shipping ships, as well as their gross violations of human rights, including the arrest and disappearance of dozens of employees of United Nations agencies, organizations and international missions.
He praised Latvia's positions alongside the Yemeni people and their legitimate government and supported their aspirations to restore state institutions and bring peace, stability and development to the country.
The President affirmed the commitment of the Presidential Leadership Council and the government to the comprehensive peace process and to support the efforts of the Special Envoy to Yemen, in accordance with the agreed terms of reference, most notably Security Council Resolution 2216.
He pointed out that the success of any political approach to achieving peace in Yemen depends on ending Iranian influence that destabilizes international peace and security, collective action to deter the threat of Houthi militias and joining the decision to classify them as a foreign terrorist organization.
For his part, the President of the Republic of Latvia affirmed his country's support for the Presidential Leadership Council, the Yemeni government and people and their aspirations for security, stability, peace and development.
