The Yemeni government has sounded the alarm on a surge in drug trafficking and manufacturing, with authorities seizing major shipments and dismantling clandestine labs.
The head of Yemen's anti-narcotics department, Brigadier General Abdullah Lahmadi, has warned that Yemen has become a major target for regional drug cartels, particularly after they faced setbacks in Syria.
According to Lahmadi, recent seizures by security forces have revealed a significant shift in the pattern of drug trafficking and manufacturing in Yemen.
He pointed to the discovery of Yemen's first fully operational Captagon and shabu factory in Al-Mahrah, where six Yemeni nationals linked to Houthi-backed smuggling networks were arrested.
