LONDON – SABA
Members of the Yemeni community, friends of Yemen and human rights advocates in the UK and Ireland held a protest in London, calling for the immediate lifting of the Houthi-imposed siege on Taiz, the permanent reopening of roads, protection of civilians, unrestricted humanitarian access and the release of abductees and arbitrarily detained individuals.
In a statement, protesters urged the British government and Parliament to take firm action, including seriously considering the designation of the Houthis as a terrorist organization under UK law, supporting independent investigations and holding those responsible for human rights violations accountable.
They also called on the UK to support Yemen’s internationally recognized government, strengthen humanitarian and development assistance, and help restore state institutions and the rule of law.
The protesters highlighted the suffering of Taiz residents due to shelling, landmines, restrictions on movement, and limited access to hospitals, schools, food and medicine.
They also cited reported violations in other Yemeni governorates, including arbitrary detention, enforced disappearance, torture, violations against women and child recruitment.
The statement stressed that lifting the siege of Taiz is not merely a matter of reopening roads, but a matter of human life, dignity and fundamental rights.
Participants also expressed appreciation to Saudi Arabia for its support to the Yemeni government and its humanitarian and diplomatic efforts.
