Yemen has called for stronger partnerships between the government and development partners and increased investment in the water sector to improve service sustainability and strengthen water security.

The call was made by Deputy Minister of Water and Environment Mujahid bin Affrar in Yemen's address to the Water Sector Coordination Group (WSCG), which met virtually on Tuesday with the participation of representatives of the Netherlands Embassy, the United Nations Development Programme, development partners and international organizations.

Yemen stressed that the challenges facing the water and sanitation sector require stronger national institutional capacities, sustainable service delivery and a shift from emergency responses to long-term planning.

It identified updating the National Water Sector Strategy and Investment Program (NWSSIP) and developing master plans for urban water supply and sanitation as key priorities.

The meeting reviewed progress in updating the national water strategy, the institutional and policy reform matrix, available funding opportunities and ways to improve coordination between government institutions and development partners to align interventions and direct resources towards priority needs.

It also discussed Yemen's participation in the 17th conferences on desertification and biodiversity (COP17), preparations for the COP31 climate conference, studies of water basins, and the Wadi Hajar and Wadi Tuban projects.
