The Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Fisheries Salem al-Soqatri held discussions today, in the temporary capital Aden, via video conference, with the World Bank (WB) team along with representatives from the UNDP and relevant authorities on the underway preparations for the new phase of the Fisheries Development Project (SFish2).
It is important to note that the total budget of the project is $50 million.
Al-Soqtari highlighted the importance of giving special attention to fish farming by preparing feasibility studies, identifying suitable locations and species, developing regulatory and technical frameworks, and benefiting from regional and international expertise.
He also underscored the need to support fish landing centers, cooling, storage, transportation, processing, and marketing chains, as well as strengthening quality systems, monitoring, data, and fishery research.
The WB team stressed that the project will pay attention to fish farming, investment opportunities, the role of the private sector, and improving institutional and regulatory capacities.
They also mentioned coordinating with the International Finance Corporation and the ministry to prepare a preliminary study on investment opportunities in fish farming and value chains.
