MOSCOW – SABA
Yemen has warned of the consequences of Iranian support for armed groups operating outside state institutions, stressing that the transfer of weapons and advanced technologies has strengthened the military capabilities of the Houthi militias and poses a threat to regional security and international maritime navigation.
The warning was made during Yemen’s address at the Sixth International Conference on Countering the Spread of Extremist Ideas in Moscow delivered by Major General Mohammed Musaed Al-Amir Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior for Security and Police Affairs.
Al-Amir said Yemen is a clear example of how extremism can evolve from ideas into armed projects supported by weapons, funding, modern technologies, recruitment networks, and smuggling operations.
He noted that Iranian support has contributed to the Houthis’ development of drones and missiles.
He stressed that these threats extend beyond Yemen to the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab Strait, threatening international maritime navigation and global trade.
Yemen called for stronger international cooperation to prevent the transfer of advanced weapons and military technologies to armed groups, cut their sources of funding, combat smuggling and terrorist financing, and address recruitment and radicalization through digital platforms.
The Ministry of Interior also emphasized the importance of cooperation among security, financial, and customs authorities, including information-sharing and joint efforts to protect borders, coastal areas, maritime routes, and cyberspace.
Al-Amir stressed that strengthening state institutions, upholding the rule of law, and preventing the proliferation of weapons outside state control are essential to combating extremism and terrorism and safeguarding the security of Yemen, the Red Sea, and international trade.
