Yemen's Ambassador to the Czech Republic, Mohammed al-Hadrami, on Thursday discussed developments in Yemen and threats posed by the Iranian-backed Houthi terrorist militia to regional security and international shipping in the Red Sea with Senator Pavel Fischer, Chairman of the Czech Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Security.

Al-Hadrami said Yemen's security and stability were directly linked to the security of the global economy, particularly the European economy, amid continued Houthi escalation in the Red Sea and its threats to international shipping and trade routes.

He said Iran continues to supply the Houthi militia with weapons and expertise, pointing to the group's growing ties with terrorist organisations in the region. These include support for Somalia's Al-Shabaab movement in exchange for assistance in destabilising Red Sea security and facilitating Iranian arms-smuggling routes to the militia, as well as coordination with Al-Qaeda.

The ambassador said the legitimate government and Yemeni Armed Forces were leading the direct fight against the Houthi militia to restore state institutions, end the coup and eliminate the threats posed by the group to Yemen, the region and international interests.

He stressed that protecting international shipping was a shared responsibility of the international community and not Yemen's responsibility alone, calling on the Czech Republic and the European Union to provide effective support to the legitimate government and Yemeni Armed Forces.

Al-Hadrami also called on the Czech Republic and the European Union to designate the Houthi militia as a terrorist organisation, saying such a move would help curb its threat, cut off its funding sources and counter its ties with other terrorist groups, particularly ISIS, Al-Qaeda and Somalia's Al-Shabaab.

For his part, Senator Fischer reaffirmed the Czech Republic's support for Yemen's legitimate government and for Yemen's security, stability, sovereignty and territorial integrity. He also expressed his country's desire to strengthen cooperation between the two friendly countries in support of regional security and stability.
