Minister Al-Sharjabi Stresses Importance of Proactive Action to Reduce Disaster Risks in Yemen
[02/09/2026 04:32]
ADEN-SABA

Minister of Water and Environment Tawfiq Al-Sharjabi has stressed the importance of strengthening proactive approaches to disaster risk management and shifting from traditional response mechanisms towards early intervention based on forecasting data and early warning systems.

Speaking at the opening of a two-day workshop in Aden on developing “anticipatory action triggers” in Yemen, Al-Sharjabi said such approaches would help reduce losses and damage and strengthen community resilience.

The workshop is organised by the Ministry of Water and Environment in cooperation with the General Authority of Civil Aviation and Meteorology, the World Food Programme and the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), with the participation of government institutions, UN agencies, organisations and international partners.

It aims to establish practical foundations for anticipatory action, strengthen national capacity to forecast climate-related risks, and develop mechanisms for preventive measures before disasters occur or worsen, including droughts, floods, cyclones and severe weather events.

Al-Sharjabi noted that Yemen faces increasing climate risks affecting lives, livelihoods, food security, infrastructure and essential services, underscoring the need to move from post-disaster response to early and proactive intervention.

He called on government bodies, international and local partners and donors to provide the technical and financial support needed to translate national plans and frameworks into practical programmes and measures.
