Minister of Water and Environment Engineer Tawfiq al-Sharjabi discussed Monday, via visual communication technology, with the delegation of the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat), headed by the organization's director in Yemen Muslim Kazemi the climate change adaptation project in the Tuban Delta in Lahj Governorate, funded by the Adaptation Fund.

Water minister calls for supporting UN initiative to rescue Safir Tanker

Minister of Water and Environment Tawfeeq al-Sharjabi has called for interaction with the United Nations' Initiative for collective supply to fill the gap of financing the emergency rescue of Safir Oil Tanker stranded off Hodeida's coasts in the Red Sea and transporting the oil inside it into a safe ship.

In a press release on Monday, al-Sharjabi warned of deterioration of Safir Tanker or its exposure anytime if swift work is not taken to avoid potential humanitarian and environmental disaster over halting maintenance work for eight years and banning access to UN team to the tanker to do necessary maintenance work.

He emphasized necessity of emptying the tanker from more than one million parrel of crude oil as soon as possible to avoid environmental pollution will destroy the sea lives in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden and will close the international maritime line connecting the cotenants.

He renewed keenness of the government on serious and continuous cooperation to facilitate the tasks of the United Nations and its team to empty the tanker and ending the issue of Safir tanker away of the conflict in the region.
