US Treasury sanctions International Network, Exchanges Firms finance Houthi militias
[24/02/2022 01:16]
WASHINGTON-SABA
The US Treasury announced on Wednesday new sanctions against Key Houthi finance international network.

The US Treasury issued a statement reads" Today, the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) is designating members of an international network funding the Houthis’ war against the Yemeni government and increasingly aggressive attacks threatening civilians and civilian infrastructure in neighboring states. Led by the U.S.-designated Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Qods Force (IRGC-QF) and Houthi financier Sa’id al-Jamal, this network has transferred tens of millions of dollars to Yemen via a complex international network of intermediaries in support of the Houthis’ attacks".

The statement added" Despite persistent calls for peace from the international community, the Houthis continue their destructive campaign inside Yemen, and have repeatedly launched ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles that have struck civilian infrastructure in neighboring states, resulting in civilian casualties. Today’s action is taken in close coordination and collaboration with regional Gulf partners.

Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Brian E. Nelson said" “Despite pleas to negotiate an end to this devastating conflict, Houthi leaders continue to launch missile and unmanned aerial vehicle attacks against Yemen’s neighbors, killing innocent civilians, while millions of Yemeni civilians remain displaced and hungry".

Nelson added "The United States continues to work with our regional allies to act decisively against those who would seek to prolong this war for their own ambitions. Houthi leaders must cease their campaign of violence and negotiate in good faith to end the conflict.”

The statement cited that Sa’id al-Jamal’s network has generated tens of millions of dollars in revenue with the aid of a diverse array of international commodity traders, including Mahamud, UAE- and Sweden-based Abdo Abdullah Dael Ahmed (Dael), and UAE-based Greek businessman Konstantinos Stavridis (Stavridis).

According to the US treasury statement al-Jamal has been aided by Yemen-based money exchange houses Al-Alamiyah Express Company for Exchange and Remittance and Al-Hadha Exchange Co. both of which have moved tens of millions of dollars in support of al-Jamal’s efforts to fund the Houthis.
