The CPJ calls on the STC to end its raids on the media outlets in Aden
[10/06/2021 05:53]

NEW YORK - SABA
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) called on the Southern Transitional Council (STC) to end its raids on the state-run media outlets in the temporary capital Aden and allow all journalists to operate freely.

The CPJ published statement in which it reported about the raids targeted the premises of the Yemeni News Agency (Saba) and the Office of Al-Thawra newspaper, both state-owned institutions.

The CPJ Senior Middle East and North Africa Researcher Justin Shilad said" With its recent raids on government-affiliated media offices, the STC is making it clear that it draws no distinction between political actors and journalists doing their jobs".

Shilad added" The STC must stop threatening journalists in Aden and areas under its control and all parties in Yemen must cease targeting journalists".

The CPJ reported that in recent years, forces loyal to the STC have assaulted and threatened journalists and detained a journalist and fixer for nearly six months. In 2020 unknown gunmen shot dead the AFP reporter Nabil Hassan al-Quaety outside his home in Aden and his killing remains unsolved mystery.
