A Yemeni minister has deplored the Houthi militia’s “systematic destruction of the country’s artifacts” over the past years.
Speaking in a virtual UNESCO conference, Information Minister Muammar al-Eryani said the radical theocratic militia which mounted a coup and seized the capital Sana’a in September 14 has “looted, trafficked and illicitly traded in artifacts, bombed and shelled heritage sites or turned them to arms caches and military sites.”
He said some Houthi leaders have been involved in trafficking thousands of relics and masterpeices abroad after stealing them from the museums and archaeological sites.”
