The French embassy in Yemen has denied reports that it had paid a large amount of money to the Houthi rebel militia in Yemen in exchange for the release of French national Marouk Abdulkader.
Abdulkader was released a couple of days ago from Houthi jails in Sana'a where he had been held for nearly a year.
A source at the embassy told Saba that the French government had made follow-up efforts to release Abdulkader but did not pay any amount to the Houthis.
Upon his release Abdulkader moved to the government-held city of Marib where he told reporters that he had been subjected to brutal torture in the Houthi jails and that his family had been robbed of their money and jewelry.
