BANGKOK – SABA
Yemen has participated in the meeting of Arab governors at the World Bank Group in Bangkok, Thailand, by a delegation led by Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, the Yemen’s Governor at the World Bank Group, Mohammed al-Faqmi
During the meeting, attended by World Bank Group President Ajay Banga, al-Faqmi stressed that after more than a decade of war, Yemen must move from crisis management toward recovery.
He called for aligning World Bank interventions with national priorities, accelerating projects, strengthening state institutions and expanding investment in electricity, water, food security and youth and women’s employment.
Yemen was also selected as one of five countries to implement a joint cooperation framework between the World Bank Group and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
The initiative aims to coordinate development efforts, strengthen institutions, attract investment, and create jobs.
The government hopes to use the framework to implement its 2027–2029 Economic, Social Development and Recovery Plan.
The two institutions currently have approximately $450 million in active funding across seven joint projects in Yemen.
In separate meetings, al-Faqmi discussed ways to address Yemen’s outstanding arrears with the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development and the Islamic Development Bank, with the aim of resuming development financing.
He also highlighted the urgent need to complete the Hassan Dam project in Abyan Governorate before the flood season. Both institutions expressed their willingness to consider new projects and resume support for sectors including health, education, electricity, roads, and drinking water once the arrears are resolved.
