Government Calls for Urgent UN Action to Lift Siege on Taiz
[14/10/2026 07:05]

ADEN – SABA
The government of Yemen has called on the United Nations and the UN Security Council to take urgent and effective measures to lift the crippling siege imposed by the Houthi terrorist militias on the city of Taiz, warning that it threatens to trigger a large-scale humanitarian catastrophe.

The call came in a letter sent by Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Dr. Afrah al-Zouba on Wednesday to the UN Secretary-General, the President of the UN Security Council, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, highlighting the alarming deterioration of the humanitarian situation in Taiz Governorate as a result of the escalation by the Houthi terrorist militias.

The Foreign Minister warned that the latest Houthi escalation and the tightening of the siege on Taiz and its surrounding villages threaten to trigger a humanitarian catastrophe affecting more than four million people, including residents trapped inside the city and displaced persons from affected districts, such as al-Shamayatayn, al-Mawasit and Jabal Habashi.

The letter called for direct international pressure to secure the immediate lifting of the siege, the reopening of all access routes into Taiz for civilians and supply chains, and the unimpeded, sustained delivery of essential supplies, including food, fuel, and drinking water.

It also called for strengthening monitoring, documentation, and accountability mechanisms to preserve evidence of violations, hold those responsible to account, and ensure that they do not escape justice.

The letter further urged the international community to adopt a clear position on any practices aimed at depriving civilians of the basic necessities of life or exploiting their humanitarian needs as a means of exerting pressure or imposing a fait accompli.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to cooperating with the United Nations, its specialized agencies, humanitarian and human rights organizations and regional and international partners.

It also pledged to provide all relevant data and information available to it and to facilitate humanitarian response efforts in order to alleviate the suffering of residents, protect civilians, and ensure that aid reaches those in need.

“The gravity of the current situation in Taiz, and the direct threat it poses to the lives, dignity, and fundamental rights of civilians, demand urgent international action that goes beyond expressions of concern and leads to practical, tangible measures to end the siege, restore the flow of essential supplies, protect civilian facilities, and prevent the humanitarian catastrophe from worsening,” the Foreign Minister said.
