GENEVA – SABA
Vice Foreign Minister and Expatriates Mustafa Noman discussed with International Organization for Migration (IOM) Deputy Director General for Operations Ugochi Daniels the humanitarian crisis in Yemen, rising displacement, irregular migration from the Horn of Africa and ways to strengthen cooperation between the government and the organization.
During the meeting, held on the sidelines of the 77th session of the UNHCR Executive Committee, Noman highlighted the impact of Houthi military escalation in Taiz and the western coast, which has reportedly displaced nearly one million additional people over the past two months.
He also warned against the forced recruitment of migrants, threats to Red Sea navigation, and violations against UN personnel and humanitarian organizations.
Yemeni officials said more than 400,000 migrants are currently in government-controlled areas, stressing the need for regional cooperation to combat smuggling and human trafficking and address the root causes of migration.
The government also called for a regional conference involving countries of origin and transit and international donors.
For her part, Daniels reaffirmed IOM’s commitment to expanding its humanitarian response and supporting displaced people, migrants, and host communities.
She welcomed a proposed joint appeal to mobilize additional funding and emphasized the importance of regional coordination to tackle migration challenges and combat trafficking networks.
