Yemen, Djibouti Discuss Cooperation on Migration and Refugee Issues
[13/10/2026 01:49]

GENEVA-SABA

Vice Foreign Minister Mustafa Noman met with Djibouti’s Interior Minister Omar Said to discuss bilateral cooperation on migration and refugee affairs amid growing humanitarian challenges caused by the continued movement of migrants and displaced people across the Red Sea.

The meeting was held on the sidelines of the 77th session of the Executive Committee of the UN Refugee Agency in Geneva, Switzerland.

Noman highlighted the economic and humanitarian repercussions of the war sparked by the Houthi militia and its impact on regional security and stability. He stressed the importance of closer coordination between the Yemeni and Djiboutian governments to address mounting humanitarian needs and growing pressure on essential services.

He expressed the Yemeni government’s gratitude to Djibouti for hosting Yemenis forced to flee their homes because of Houthi military escalation and worsening humanitarian conditions. He also praised Djibouti’s leadership, government and people for their solidarity and continued support for Yemenis living in the country, noting the deep historical ties and family bonds between the two nations.

For his part, Minister Said outlined the humanitarian and logistical challenges facing Djibouti as it receives daily arrivals of refugees and irregular migrants from Yemen and the Horn of Africa. He highlighted urgent needs at reception centers and camps, particularly the rehabilitation of shelters and prefabricated buildings ahead of the rainy season and anticipated weather changes.

Said called for increased direct humanitarian assistance from the international community and donor organizations through bilateral partnerships and cooperation with regional and international humanitarian agencies to strengthen Djibouti’s capacity to respond to the growing needs of refugees and migrants.

Both sides emphasized the importance of maintaining diplomatic coordination at international forums in Geneva and intensifying efforts to mobilize international support for urgent humanitarian needs. They said these efforts would help ease the burden on both countries and improve conditions for refugees and migrants.
