GENEVA-SABA
Minister of Human Rights Mashdal Omar discussed on Monday with Germany’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Ambassador Antje Leendertse, the latest human rights developments in Yemen, the repercussions of the recent military escalation by the Houthi militia, and ways to strengthen cooperation in supporting the ministry’s work and institutional capacity.
Omar praised Germany’s continued support for Yemen in humanitarian affairs, human rights protection and peacebuilding, stressing the government’s commitment to strengthening cooperation to protect civilians, ease their suffering and support national human rights institutions.
He reviewed the impact of the Houthi escalation in Taiz governorate, the western coastal districts of Taiz and Hudaydah, and the governorates of Marib and Dhale’a, including rising displacement and worsening humanitarian needs, as well as violations against civilians in areas overrun by the Houthi militia.
The meeting also addressed the Houthis’ continued recruitment of children, abductions and enforced disappearances, as well as the detention of dozens of UN, humanitarian and civil society workers and their prosecution in unlawful proceedings. Omar called for increased international pressure on the Houthi militia to secure the immediate and unconditional release of all detainees and end violations against civilians.
Deputy Human Rights Minister Nabil Abdulhafiz reviewed efforts to strengthen monitoring and documentation mechanisms, reporting, cooperation with UN mechanisms and special rapporteurs, and preparations for a national human rights strategy. He stressed the need for support for training and capacity-building programs and closer cooperation with civil society organizations and human rights defenders.
Ambassador Leendertse reaffirmed Germany’s continued support for the Yemeni government and efforts to improve human rights conditions, alleviate humanitarian suffering, promote de-escalation and restore stability in Yemen.
