Latvia strongly condemned the ongoing hostile acts in Yemen and the continuous Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, including threats targeting the Bab al-Mandeb Strait.

The Permanent Representative of Latvia to the United Nations, Sanita Pavļuta-Deslandes said, during the Security Council session on Yemen, " 'Bab al-Mandeb and the Red Sea are among the most vital arteries for international trade, and these waterways cannot be a space for intimidation or hostile actions".

She called on the Houthi terrorist militias to stop all attacks and threats in Yemen and beyond, including attacks targeting commercial shipping.

She also urged respect for the basic principles governing freedom of navigation and an end to the continuous flow of weapons, pointing out that Iranian support for the Houthis contributes to destabilizing the region.

The Latvian diplomat called for the effective implementation of the arms supply ban, which would help reduce the Houthis' ability to resume hostilities and carry out more attacks.

She confirmed that her country will continue to stand with the Yemeni people and support the unity, sovereignty and independence of their land.
