ADEN - SABA
The Minister of Electricity and Energy Engineer Adnan al-Kaaf conferred today, Sunday, with the Economic Advisor at the Office of the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy to Yemen Dirk Jan Omtzigt, in the temporary capital Aden, over joint cooperation in the electricity and energy.
They discussed the challenges and ways to mobilize international support for the government's efforts to stabilize and improve the electricity service.
The talks also covered pressing needs of the electricity sector, primarily securing the fuel needed to operate power plants, supporting the network infrastructure, as well as pathways for developing the sector and gradually transitioning to renewable energy.
They also touched on the daily operational needs of the Petromasila station in Aden, the need of regular fuel supplies and the Saudi fuel grant for supporting the generation system and improving service.
Al-Kaf confirmed that the first batch of Saudi generators has arrived, and that more batches are expected to arrive subsequently. Once all the equipment is in place and operational, it will provide an additional generation capacity of up to 100 megawatts, he remarked.
The Minister highlighted the importance of the UN's humanitarian role in supporting efforts to stabilize electricity services, especially when it comes to securing fuel transport. Transporting fuels by sea and ships is a faster safer, and cheaper option, al-Kaf stressed.
The UN adviser stated that the UN is interested in supporting the government’s efforts to improve basic services, particularly the electricity sector. He confirmed the UN’s readiness to help overcome difficulties related to fuel transport and ensuring its delivery.
