IMO Secretary-General Condemns Houthi Attacks as Threat to International Shipping
[25/07/2026 12:03]
LONDON-SABA

International Maritime Organization (IMO) Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez has strongly condemned attacks by the Iran-backed Houthi terrorist militias on vessels in the Red Sea, warning that they pose a serious threat to international shipping.

In a statement, Dominguez described the attacks as "unjustifiable," saying they endanger the lives of seafarers, threaten the security of international navigation, jeopardize the marine environment, and disrupt global supply chains.

"Seafarers are civilians performing essential work that supports economies and communities around the world," he said.

Dominguez also renewed his call for the immediate and unconditional release of all seafarers who remain detained following piracy-related attacks in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.

He further expressed concern over the risk of pollution resulting from the reported maritime incidents in the Red Sea, as well as previous incidents in the Strait of Hormuz.
