The Chairman of the Civil Status and Civil Registry Authority Major General Dr. Mohammed Baharoon discussed sunday with a delegation from the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), led by Deputy Representative for Programmes in Yemen Obia Ashing ways of strengthening joint cooperation in developing the civil registration system and supporting efforts to register births and assign a National Identification Number (NIN) to children from birth.

This will help safeguarding every child's right to a legal identity.

The meeting reviewed issues related to the development of the electronic civil registration system, with particular emphasis on the importance of assigning a National Identification Number to children at birth.

As a permanent legal identifier for every citizen, the NIN represents a significant step toward ensuring children's legal identity and enabling them to access essential services, including healthcare, education, protection and social welfare.

Both sides underscored the importance of continuing coordination and joint cooperation to further develop the electronic civil registration system and raise public awareness of the importance of birth registration, in order to serve the best interests of children and strengthen their access to their legal and human rights.

The UNICEF delegation commended the efforts of the Civil Status and Civil Registry Authority to modernize civil registration services, particularly the launch of the National Identification Number issuance service for children from birth.

The delegation emphasized that this initiative marks a major milestone in advancing children's rights and will contribute to expanding their access to essential services more effectively.
