Minister of Public Health an Population Dr. Qassem Buhaybah discussed Sunday with a team from the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) a number of ongoing interventions and projects in health sector.
The two parties also discussed mechanisms to strengthen partnership and coordination in a way that supports health system and improves level of services provided to citizens.
Minister Buhaybah emphasized the importance of directing interventions and support provided by international partners according to the actual needs and urgent priorities identified by the ministry, ensuring the best possible impact of implemented projects and enhancing the efficiency of health services across various governorates.
He noted that the ministry carefully values partnership with international organizations, foremost among them UNOPS, as a key partner in supporting health infrastructure projects and rehabilitating medical facilities.
He pointed out that the current phase requires greater focus on sustainable projects with direct impact on citizens, calling for the completion of the sixth phase of projects funded by the German Development Bank due to their importance in strengthening the capacity of health facilities and improving their operational readiness.
He stressed the need to accelerate implementation and address any obstacles that may affect progress.
The Minister also highlighted the importance of unifying efforts and support allocated to solar energy projects in the health sector, considering them a strategic solution to ensure continuity of medical services, especially in light of challenges related to power outages and rising operational costs, which directly affect hospitals and health centers.
He explained that reliance on alternative energy in health facilities contributes to operating emergency and intensive care units, as well as vaccine and medicine cold chains, and enhances the ability of health institutions to respond to growing needs.
He praised the support provided by UNOPS in advancing health infrastructure and its contributions to rehabilitating several facilities and improving work environments, helping medical staff perform their duties and deliver better services to citizens.
For his part, the Regional Director of UNOPS Mohammed Othman presented a detailed overview of the organization’s key interventions in the health sector and projects implemented in the recent period, as well as those still underway in several governorates.
These include rehabilitation of health infrastructure, provision of essential equipment, and support for continuity of services in targeted facilities.
He commended cooperation with the Ministry of Public Health and Population, affirming the office’s commitment to continuing work with the ministry and international partners to meet humanitarian and development needs in the health sector and strengthen the capacity of health institutions to deliver services efficiently and sustainably.
