The Deputy Chief of the General Staff, Major General Ahmed al-Basar met Thursday with the Head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) mission in Aden, Mahmoud Abu Husaiba.
The two prties discussed ways to enhance joint cooperation and the Committee’s medical and humanitarian interventions in light of the current security developments.
The meeting addressed the measures taken to implement the directives of His Excellency President Dr. Rashad Mohammed al-Alimi, Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council, which call for the closure of illegal prisons and the release of arbitrarily detained individuals, in a manner that strengthens respect for human rights, consolidates the rule of law, removes military camps from within the temporary capital Aden, and ends armed manifestations, thereby contributing to enhanced security and stability.
The two parties also discussed the efforts of the ICRC regarding the handling of the detainees file in the aftermath of the recent events in Hadramout Governorate, and the resulting humanitarian repercussions that require the concerted efforts of local and international actors.
al-Basar praised the humanitarian role played by the ICRC in Yemen, commending its interventions in support of the health sector.
He emphasized the importance of supporting the military medical sector in the various liberated governorates and enhancing its capabilities to enable it to respond to emergency cases and provide necessary medical services to both members of the armed forces and civilians alike.
He also reviewed the attacks and violations committed by the Houthi terrorist militias, which constitute a flagrant breach of international humanitarian law, stressing the need for the ICRC to fulfill its role in documenting these violations and exerting pressure to protect civilians and medical facilities, and to ensure respect for international laws and norms.
For his part, the Head of the ICRC mission reaffirmed the Committee’s commitment to continuing its humanitarian and medical interventions and strengthening coordination with official authorities in a way that contributes to responding to urgent humanitarian needs.
